Narkoojee
Narkoojee is a little vineyard and winery within easy reach of
the gold mining town of Walhalla. At Narkoojee you can look out over
the Strzelecki Ranges as you taste the rich and intensely flavoured
table wines. Narkoojee means "place of flowers"
Narkoojee is nestled into the foothills of the Great Dividing
range, just 12 kms north of Traralgon in central Gippsland.
The vineyard is on deep, fertile, alluvial soils comprising
various mixtures of clay, silts, sand and ironstone gravels. The
first vines planted were chardonnay, merlot and cabernet sauvignon
from which two wine styles were made; a dry white and a dry red. The
wines were immediately successful, winning bronze and gold medals at
their first showing and two trophies in 1988 and 1989.
In 1990, a further 5 acres were planted with chardonnay, cabernet
franc, merlot and two clones of cabernet sauvignon.
The vineyard has been consistently ranked very highly by critics
and judges alike. This has been borne out by the volume of prizes
won by their wines.
