Merrebee
Estate
The Merrebee Estate vineyard
and wine label has been owned and operated by the current owner
since 1994. However, the original vineyard was planted by a
previous owner in 1985.
Mount Barker is a registered
sub region of the wine producing district of the Great Southern
region of Western Australia and is the coolest wine producing area
of WA. Mount Barker is situated 350 kms south east of Perth and 50
kms inland from Albany on the south coast of WA.
The mean temperatures during
the ripening months are just marginally lower than in the Medoc
and much lower than in the warmer Bordeaux appellations such as
Pomerol and Saint Emilion.
The area consistently
produces some of Australia’s best dry Rieslings. The moderate
ripening temperatures result in wines of classic Australian
Riesling style with fresh acidity. Chardonnay, likewise tends
towards the initially lean European style, rather than towards the
immediately full-fruited style of Chardonnays of Australia’s
warmer viticultural regions.
