The very high popularity of Australian Chardonnay is a comparatively recent phenomenon. Whilst it has been grown since the first half of the 20th Century it was only in the 1980's that the vineyards of South Australia in particular started to produce it in the sort of volumes we see today.

A bunch of Chardonnay grapeNow grown throughout Australia Chardonnay produces some of the classic Australian whites, bursting with sunshine, butter and oak. However, it can also produce more subtle wines, where lemon and mineral flavours come to the fore.
