Cannibal
Creek
The Cannibal
Creek winery is located in the foothills of the Black Snake Ranges
in the West Gippsland Region of Victoria, Australia. The grapes
are hand-picked and the wines crafted with the minimal amount of
handling, producing traditional style, premium wines.
In 1997 the
Hardiker family planted two hectares each of Chardonnay and Pinot
Noir on the granite foothills of Tynong North. This area with its
deeply weathered soils and gentle slopes is ideal for producing
high quality wines and sunshine hours are more than adequate to
ripen early grape varieties. A further planting of one hectare in
1998 of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc makes up
the vineyard today.
The winery
takes its name from the Cannibal Creek, a tributary of the Bunyip
River that forms the eastern boundary of the property. It is
believed that the Creek itself was named after the original
pastoral selection of Crown land called 'Connabul Run' and over
the years the spelling was corrupted. The name invariably induces
much wild speculation though!
